Ancient Stagira, a town where Aristotle was born in 384 BC, is located at a coastal location, 10 kilometers east of the modern (today) mountain village of Stagira, on a mountainous peninsula in Halkidiki, Central Macedonia. The ancient city of Stagira was destroyed by Philip II but was rebuilt by Alexander the Great in honor of his teacher. This ancient city is next to the modern settlement of Olympiada and is a visiting archaeological site. At the entrance of the village today visitors can visit the park where the statue of Aristotle is located, as well as many ground-level monuments such as towers (one of the 16th century), public baths and the condo of Mademois Aga, from the Iron Age . The central temple is dedicated to the Birth of the Virgin Mary and dates back to 1814. It celebrates on September 8th.
